Personalized Medicine in Joint Arthroplasty

Joint replacement represents a very successful procedure and it could be nicely performed with conventional surgical planning, instruments, prosthesis, surgical procedure and perioperative management nowadays. Unfortunately, less than 80% of arthroplasty patients are fully satisfied after joint arthroplasty performed according to standard protocols. To break through the bottleneck of clinical performance, the concept of personalized medicine and precision medicine has been recently introduced in arthroplasty. Robotic surgery, computer navigation, patient-specific instruments, custom-made arthroplasty and personalized perioperative management have been all used in multiple medical institutions worldwide. The effect of these new techniques on surgical precision has been fully established, while their potential in conducting personalized medicine and in improving clinical benefits are still needed to be determined.

We set up this Special Issue of Arthroplasty to collect current evidence focusing on modern technologies able to help arthroplasty surgeons in achieving personalized medicine thanks to an improvement in evaluation, planning, treatment and postoperative rehabilitation. In this special issue, we welcome original Research Articles, Review Articles, Systematic Reviews and Perspectives, related to potential topics including, but not limited, to the following:

  • Gait analysis following joint arthroplasty
  • Advanced biomechanical studies on joint arthroplasty
  • Personalized perioperative management
  • Patient-specific instruments for arthroplasty
  • Electromagnetic navigation devices application
  • Custom-made arthroplasty
  • Wireless sensors in joint forces estimation
  • Cloud platform follow-up and rehabilitation guidance
  • New techniques in personalized preoperative surgical planning and operation
  • Robotic surgery
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in arthroplasty
  • Computer navigation
  • 2D and 3D image matching and precise imaging evaluation
